Thoughts and beliefs getting in the way of taking action (and ruining results!)

Uncategorized Apr 17, 2024

I help my clients get consistent with an action. Usually something with mornings, meals, or movement.

And I help them repeat that action long enough so they get results. Yay.

But there are other things at play below the surface.

I also help my clients understand why they're not taking action. We all have things that pop up in life or thoughts that pop up in our heads that prevent us from taking action.

Example: last night I almost did not go to the gym. I had a long work day, I was tired, and I really didn't want to go.

Thoughts: In my head, I was telling myself, "It's okay if you don't go. You had a long day. You can't expect to push yourself so much. You can go tomorrow instead."

Had I listened to those thoughts, I wouldn't have gone! I would have stopped being consistent! And I would have felt frustrated with myself later on. And by not being consistent with an action, I wouldn't get the result I wanted.

Beliefs: it would have perpetuated the old belief that I cannot achieve things, that I am a quitter, that I can't get my life together.

Instead of not going, I went. I didn't have a lot of energy to do a lot so I just walked on the treadmill for 20 minutes. The important thing is for me to keep the habit of going to the gym.

Thoughts: I told myself "You have to go. You're working on being consistent. It's ok if you don't do an intense workout. It's ok for you to listen to your body. But you do have to go!"

Beliefs: By going and walking on the treadmill, I instead reinforced the belief that I am a consistent person. That I am someone who takes action. That I am someone who does something small instead of nothing at all.

It's important to get our thoughts and beliefs in line with the actions we want to take, the person we want to be, and the results we want to achieve.

Without getting our thoughts and beliefs aligned, we will never actually take action.
